LabVIEW Consulting for Software Engineering Teams
At SAS Workshops, we believe in making learning simple and applying it powerfully. By shifting our approach to software design, developers can unlock new opportunities, uncover more effective solutions, and, most importantly, experience true joy and satisfaction in their work.
Organizations that adopt the SAS Philosophy experience a transformation. When they recognize that every developer brings a unique perspective to problem-solving and move beyond rigid workflows or programs, something magical happens. A culture of freedom and creativity emerges, leading to better solutions and more fulfilled developers. And as we all know, happy developers write better code.
What We Help With
We can help you modernize legacy code in a way that makes sense and maintains the integrity of your system. You will learn how to test the things that are important and then refactor safely, making it easy to add new features without breaking existing functionality.
Legacy Code Rescue
Wherever you are on your unit testing journey we can help. Whether you are looking for support to implement testing into an existing code base, or seeking education on best practices for projects going forward, we have the means to support you. Legacy code, hard to test code, managing large numbers of tests, and writing code that is easier to test - on any of the major frameworks- are all topics we touch when consulting on unit testing. We will teach you how to keep things performant and readable.
Unit Testing Strategy
Git gives us the freedom to experiment. While it is the safety net that allows us to recover, Git can be intimidating. With large teams and large projects things can get complicated quickly. We can help you simplify your workflows and understand what’s going on behind the scenes so you can recover no matter what problems you run into. With help from us, you will be able to navigate those challenges and design better workflows.
Git Workflows
We’ve been doing CI/CD in LabVIEW for many years now. It can be challenging even with some of the new advances from NI. We can help you navigate all the tools and help you clarify your existing workflows (and develop new ones if needed) and then automate them so that you can get quicker feedback. We have templates we can provide to get you running faster.
CI/CD Pipelines
There are many different frameworks, design patterns, and approaches to writing code. All are unique and usable in varying situations. We can help you evaluate all the options, and determine which is best for you, your company, your clients, and your team. We will dive deeply into the pros and cons of each so that we can be sure that the code will work for you instead of you working for the code.
Architecture Coaching
A well oiled team easily outperforms the same number of individuals. Key phrase here being “well-oiled”. Working in a team brings up all kinds of challenges, including (but definitely not limited to) communication, knowledge sharing, skills development, setting norms, organizing work, and team rapport. Our coaching covers all of these topics and more through regularly scheduled group work sessions. Our team coaching has excelled the workflows of many engineers and created cohesive teams.

Who We Work With
-
We help LabVIEW Developers level up their skills by showing them what is possible. We take tools and techniques from the greater software engineering world and teach LabVIEW Developers how and when to apply them to LabVIEW.
-
We help Test Engineers write simple Data Acquisition code and automate many of their daily tasks. We also help them debug LabVIEW code that they inherit from others.
-
We help engineering managers provide training for their team. We help them to do more with their existing team without overworking them, but by simply giving their team members new skills and techniques.
-
We help R&D teams to change direction quickly as their research uncovers new challenges. We help them to avoid coding themselves into a corner. We give them tools to keep the code quality high, so it is reliable and easy to maintain and change.
-
We help automated test teams organize their tests and test data. We help them extract insights from their test data. We also help them write robust, performant code so that the assembly line keeps humming.
Our Process
We start off our engagements with a discovery session to learn more about your project, needs, and team. After we determine the best plan for your project, we take one or more of the following steps:
Team Discovery Session - We sit down with your team to learn about their capabilities and determine areas for improvement.
Code Reviews - We take time with your code to assess how it is working for your project and how it can be improved.
Ongoing Trainings - We meet with your team to provide training on various topics, all while using your code (if applicable).
Regular Meetings - We meet with you to discuss your project and make sure it is headed in the right direction. We conduct weekly reviews to share progress and determine that your goals are being met.
We do it all by empowering your team to do their best work so that you become an employer that programmers love to work for.
